2009 Oxford Dictionary Word Of The Year Unfriend

Recently the all knowing Oxford Dictionary listed its new words for 2009, most of the words are born through the social media age and search. So, the Oxford University 2009 Word of the Year in: unfriend.

Unfriend – verb – means to remove someone you know from a social networking website. After I had a huge argument with my friend from school last week, I decided to ‘unfriend’ her from my Facebook page.

Some other words motivated by technology acknowledged this year are:

  • Intoxicated – distracted because texting or sms’ing on a mobile phone while driving a vehicle
  • Netbook – small portable computer, much smaller than a laptop
  • Sexting – sending someone sexually explicit texts from your mobile phone
