SEO, Link Building and the Forward Slash

Posted on January 6, 2010

One of the most common errors I see amongst SEO professionals and people who own business websites is that in the link building process their link will look like www.localseoadvice.com.au when listed in directories, on affiliates sites or any other sites that may generate referrals back to your homepage.

SEO Tip 101 for building quality links – always display the link you are going to list as it looks on your homepage. In the case of Local SEO Advice it would be a mistake to use the above without a forward slash as it looks on our homepage. Therefore it should look like this – www.localseoadvice.com.au/. That is how you should market your link.

I am willing to bet that as time goes on, the way of on-page and off-page search engine optimization will differ as we know it. I think we will see a transformation to client factors in determining SERP results. That included with increased personalized results and we’ll be seeing a huge molding of the users experience with Google and the other search engines. Each search result will not be created alike, just look at things like user involvement, bounce rate, bounce time, etc… Put your energy on a better website all around, and I think you’ll see better results in 2010.

Does it really make any difference?
I have been building links to my site as http://www.spanishmortgage.org – no forward slash on the end.
And it has climbed the rankings very nicely.
If it is better then I shal start adding the forward slash but I havent seen any detrimental effect to not having it so far.
Are there any guidelines in Google for webmasters?

    Hi,

I am not sure if it is purely coincedence or just great SEO advise but after registering my website domain with a / at the end it got indexed by google literally 2 hours later.
In any case, thanks a lot for the advise and keep up the good work!

    Cheers,

    Niels
